Our New York motorcycle accident attorneys have reported several times on the added risks posed to motorcyclists on the highways.  Due to the smaller size of motorcycles and lack of protection around the vehicle, motorcyclists, and drivers sharing the road with them, must be extra vigilant to increase motorcyclists’ safety on the highways.

Now, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), motorcycles equipped with anti-lock brakes can cut the risk of a deadly crash for riders. An anti-lock system automatically reduces brake pressure when a lockup is about to occur and increases it again after traction is restored.  This prevents the motorcycle from skidding when brakes are applied suddenly, according to the IIHS.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV) reports that 5,150 motorcycle accidents occurred in the state in 2009, killing 155 people and injuring 5,042 others. In Onondago County alone, there were eight motorcycle riders killed and 125 who suffered serious personal injuries, according to the NYSDMV data.

IIHS has developed a pamphlet, “Motorcycle ABS: Why you want to ride with it” explaining what antilock braking systems do, how they work, and the key research on their safety benefits.  The pamphlet is available for distribution at rider training events and is meant to encourage riders shopping for new bikes to choose models equipped with the latest technology.

New York requires all motorcyclists to wear helmets when riding within the state.   Although not all states require helmet usage, IIHS statistics  show that motorcycle helmets reduce the risk of crash fatality by 37 percent, and are 69 percent effective at preventing head injuries.

State law requires that all motorcycle operators and passengers wear approved motorcycle helmets as defined by U.S. Department of Transportation federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS 218).  In addition, all New York motorcycle operators must also follow these guidelines:

  • Wear approved eye protection even if the motorcycle is equipped with a windshield.
  • Ensure that the motorcycle windshield is of an approved type.
  • Present written certification that prescription or made-to-order safety glasses worn meet New York’s DMV standards.
  • Eye protection must be manufactured in conformity with the regulations established by the American National Standard Institute (ANSI – Z87.1).

New York drivers can do their part to keep cyclists safe by keeping a proper lookout for motorcycles, leaving adequate room around motorcycles (too often, cars and trucks try to share a lane with motorcycles or follow too closely); and anticipating a motorcyclist’s actions (for instance, a motorcycle will usually swerve around a pothole or other obstructions).

Our NY accident attorneys also encourage motorcyclists to follow the rules of the road and ensure they are visible before making lane changes or turns.  We also encourage you to read the IIHS pamphlet regarding anti-lock brakes and weigh the benefits before purchasing a motorcycle.
