The Democrat and Chronicle reports the National Weather Service is predicting up to four inches of snow could fall in the Rochester area over night.  In addition, it is calling for temperatures to stay below freezing with wind gusts of up to 40 mph.  This can be a dangerous combination when driving in the area.

Our Rochester car accident attorneys encourage all residents to avoid driving during treacherous winter conditions if at all possible.  If you must be out on the highways, please use extreme caution and follow basic safety guidelines.

We previously offered tips for arriving safely at your destination when traveling long distance.  First and foremost we remind drivers to remove all distractions and focus completely on driving.  Put the cell phones away and keep your hot drinks safely stowed, and always make sure to buckle-up.

Below are guidelines from AAA for driving in adverse winter weather.

  • Make sure you are fully rested before attempting to drive in poor weather.  The stress of avoiding slipping and sliding requires you to be fully alert.
  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying slight pressure when trying to pick up speed is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids.
  • Drive slower than the posted speed limit and don’t tailgate those in front of you. It takes longer on snow-covered roads to stop.
  • Allow an eight to ten second buffer between you and the car in front of you.
  • When braking “keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal.” Avoid slamming on the brake – it will just cause you to skid.
  • When approaching a snow-covered hill slowly gain momentum to build inertia to carry you to the top.  Once you crest the hill begin slowing by lifting your foot off the accelerator.
  • If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy and snowy weather.
  • Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface (wet, ice, sand).  You should maintain full control of the vehicle with your foot near the brake pedal.

Take the time to enjoy the beauty and fun snow can offer, but please drive safely if you must be out in the poor weather.
