Earlier this month the New York State Department of Transportation announced the unveiling of its updated bicycle Web site – Bike NY.  Offered as “a gateway for everyone to discover the wide variety of cycling opportunities and information available in New York,” the website offers statewide bicycling maps to encourage the sport while also providing information on biking laws to keep riders safe.

NY State DOT Commissioner Joan McDonald said bicycling is growing in popularity, and the expanded website provides New York cyclists with “information on bicycle safety, travel tips and the state’s magnificent bicycle routes.”

Our Syracuse car accident attorneys encourage residents to take the opportunity to enjoy the many miles of New York biking trails.  Bikers in the Syracuse area can enjoy State Bicycle Route 5 that extends 365 miles from Niagara Falls across New York to the Massachusetts state line. The route parallels the Erie Canal and the New York State Canalway Trail and passes through Onondaga County.

The updated web site offers information including which bridges spanning the St. Lawrence Seaway, Hudson or Niagara Rivers permit cyclists to cross and links to transit providers statewide that identify which trains, buses, ferries or subways permit bicycles to be carried on.

“We’re glad to see more and more cyclists traveling New York State,” Commissioner McDonald said. “This new Web site is one more way the State Department of Transportation is promoting mobility while supporting bicycle safety from Long Island to Buffalo and everywhere in between.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2009, 630 bicyclists were killed and another 51,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the United States. Bicyclist deaths accounted for 2 percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities, and made up 2 percent of all the people injured in traffic crashes during the year.

In New York in 2009, of the 1,156 total traffic fatalities, 29 bicyclists lost their lives, representing 2.5 percent of the fatalities.

While New York supports bikers with the extensive network of trails, our New York personal injury attorneys encourage drivers to stay alert and to be aware of bicyclists sharing the roads.   We also urge bikers to do their part to be visible, and to obey all biker safety laws.
